| Q: | One experience I have as a gay Roman Catholic is that I have been shut out of any dialogue with my hierarchy of bishops and Pope. They make statements based on philosophical constructs, without consulting any gay and lesbian persons. Letters to them from us go unanswered. They will not meet with us. They will not dialogue with us in particular about our struggles with feeling God's love for us, our dignity as human persons, and our discovering values for our behavior. They insist on chasity, but do not teach us how to live the way they want us to live. They treat us as non-persons. My question is this: how do we begin to dialogue with persons in ecclesial power, pastors, who shun us, treat us non-persons, prescribe behavior for us, but will not speak with us, as if we don't exist as more than an abstractions? |
